“The past year has brought triumph and defeat for north Whidbey prep sports, from the Coupeville girls’ basketball team’s run last season to the Oak Harbor wrestlers.These are just a few of what we at the Whidbey News-Times thought were the highlights from 2000. Although not all athletes’ accomplishments can be mentioned, all should be recognized for competing, win or lose. OH WrestlingThe Wildcats achieved great success in wrestling last season as they went 10-0 in league meets and thier only blemmish was to Anacortes who tied them during a non-league meet. Oak Harbor went all the way to the state meet at the Tacoma Dome last season. Brian Lang took third at 145 pounds, Danny Wichers placed fifth at 125 pounds and Brent Lang grabbed sixth at 171 pounds in Tacoma. This season the Cats have continued to dominate WesCo 4A Wrestling. Kurt Karjalainen, a 1995 Oak Harbor graduate and son of the Cats assistant wrestling coach Rick Karjalainen, fished second in the nation in NCAA II wrestling.CV Girls Basketball The Wolves had a Cinderella season last year as they beat league-leading Arch Bishop Thomas Murphy twice at the end of the season and went on to play in the State tournament. The girls had a good showing in the Tacoma Dome as they defeated Freeman during the first round, 46-42 but they were ousted after consecutive losses to Toledo and Warden. Coupeville girls basketball has gone through some changes this season with new head coach Greg Oldham.CVBBThe Coupeville boys basketball team had an exciting year as they made it to the Tri-District tournament and finnished the season with a 10-2 league mark and 12-8 over all regular-season record, one game behind division champs Darrington. The Wolves were ousted by Chief Leschi during the tournament and fell one game short of the state tournemant. The team has been decimated with injuries this season as Pat Bennett and Ty Blouin have been on he shelf for all of the regular season. Chris Good has stepped up thus far but the team will welcome the two seniors back in 2001.Track and field The Wildcats had a good year in track and field. Three athletes ran for the Cats at the state meet. Joe Donnellon placed second in both the 1600 and 3200-meter races. Donnellon placed eighth in over all individual scoring. Two other Oak Habor athletes had good showings in track and field. Molly Bull took fourth at state meet in the 800-meter dash and placed eighth in the long jump. Scott Sebens took seventh in the 800 and sixth in the 1600-meter for the boys at state. The Coupeville boys track and field team had their best finnes ever this past year as they placed 13th in the state. Brianne King placed sixth in the 1600-meter race at state for Coupeville. Tennis Oak Harbor’s Charissa Brecht and Theresa Black took fourth in state for doubles while Stacie Pate finnished a stellar year with a trip to state as well. But Pate lost 2-of-3 matches during the state meet. Golf The Oak Harbor girls golf team won the 4A WesCo. championship. Kamiak was the next closest team to the Wildcats but were 14 points behind. CV slow pitchThe Coupeville slow pitch team made it to the tri-district tournament for the first time in eight years but were ousted short of making it to the state tournament. The Wolves finnished with a record of 8-4 in league play and 12-8 over all as they finnished the season only one game back of Orcus Island. CV FootballAfter a great season that saw the Coupeville football team defeat Concrete for the first time in seven years, the Wolves missed the playoffs by one game. The team lost to La Conner with players getting sick on the sidelines but still playing. Other highlights included Ian Barrons’ 300-yard rushing performance against Darrington. The Wolves finnished the season with a league record of, 3-2 and a 5-4 over all record.OH Cross CoutryScott Sebens finished 16th at state this year. The ranking is the second time in in as many years that Sebens has finished in the top 20. OH Girls’ SoccerThe Wildcat’s girls Soccer team made the playoffs for the first time in five years. The Cats finnished the season 7-2-1 and 12-2-1. Oak Harbor was knocked out of the playoffs by Curtis High School after Wildcat goal keeper Abby Busic was injured and a controversial penalty kick was given to the Tacoma school. The successful penalty kick was the deciding factor in the game and the Cats season.OH girls swimThe Wildcats saved their best for last this last season. Despite posting a 5-5 season record the girls rose to the challange at their state meet taking sixth at state as a team and swimming to fourth place in the 200-yard medley relay. Kyla Meuer placed third while Chauntelle Johnson took fifth in the 50 free style. Meuer also placed fourth in 100 freestyle. The relay team tied with Decatur High School for third in the 400 freestyle. “
