Grant Schroeder used his arm and his bat to help the Oak Harbor High School baseball team pound visiting Mountlake Terrace 10-2 Friday, March 22.

The win over traditionally tough Terrace was Oak Harbor’s first in conference play. The Wildcats (1-1, 2-3) play a three-game Wesco North series with Marysville-Pilchuck (1-1, 2-1) this week. The Tomahawks come to Oak Harbor at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, and Friday, March 29.

Schroeder fired a complete game against Mountlake Terrace, surrendering no earned runs and no walks. He struck out three and gave up seven hits.

The senior also slapped two hits, scored two runs and drove in another.

Oak Harbor scored all of its runs in the second through fifth innings, starting things off with a four-run second.

Anthony Stewart began the uprising with a triple, then scored on a wild pitch. With one out, Andrew Snavely walked and Brandon Bailey reached on an infield hit. Schroeder’s line-drive single scored Snavely. A walk to Jack Richter load the bases. A single by Mike Maletto scored the third run, and the fourth came on an error off the bat of Cory Cameron.

David Kusnick walked and scored on an error in the third.

Oak Harbor tallied three more in the fourth. Brent Mertins and Richter walked, then Maletto loaded the bases when his fielder’s choice failed to record an out. Two scored on Cameron’s smash off the third baseman’s glove. Stewart’s ground out pushed across the third run.

Mertins’ double brought home the final two runs in the fifth.

Coach Tyson VanDam said, “It was nice to get them down early. Grant threw well today; he was very efficient.”
