For a young team, the Oak Harbor High School soccer team doesn’t have the ideal schedule.
Instead of slowing working up to the toughest teams, the Wildcats opened the 2012 season with a 4-0 loss at a very cold Shoreline Stadium against perennial power Shorecrest Tuesday, March 13.
It won’t get any easier as Oak Harbor hosts Glacier Peak in the home opener Monday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. The Grizzlies won the 2010 state title and finished third last year.
Against the powerful Scots, Oak Harbor fielded a team with no seniors (two freshmen, six sophomores and three juniors). The veteran Shorecrest club scored two goals in each half to control the match.
Oak Harbor coach Brian Thompson said, “Shorecrest was one of the top teams last year and I felt we played them pretty well for a young team. I think we are still building on what was done last year and are progressively getting better. I have high expectations for this team and believe we will have a good year.”
