“^Oak Harbor’s Scott Sebens ran away with the male athlete of the meet honors Saturday at South Whidbey’s Westling Invitational. Sebens won the 1,600 meters in 4:18.3 and the 800 in 1:59.50.^Sebens broke a 13-year record by 5.4 seconds in the 1,600 and posted a personal best time in the event. He currently has the third-ranking 1,600 time in the state.^While Sebens had a great day, it also proved to be a good one for athletes from Oak Harbor and Coupeville.^In addition to Sebens, the Oak Harbor boys got first from Stefan Kulpa, Jeremy Morgan, and Ezrael Comicho.^The Oak Harbor girls’ team made a valiant effort to win their meet but fell just 2 2/3 points of winner South Whidbey.^Coupeville, one of the smallest schools in the meet, had two champions: Rich Wilson and Jess Roundy.^The girls’ meet saw a tremendous battle for top team honors between Oak Harbor and South Whidbey. Going into the last three events, the Wildcats were in fourth place. Then the Wildcats won the 800 and 1,600 relays, and placed third and seventh in the triple jump. However, South Whidbey held on to win with 135 points. Oak Harbor had 132 1/3. Coupeville had 28 points but finished sixth, placing ahead of five 3-A and 2-A schools.^Oak Harbor’s Molly Bull had two first places, pulling out the long jump on her last attempt, and running the lead-off leg on Oak Harbor’s 1,600 relay. Bull saved her best jump for last in the long jump, going 15-9 3/4.^In one of the best races of the day, Bull won the 800 in 2:19.26. She beat Camille Connelly of Marysville-Pilchuck, one of the state’s top runners, by 2/10ths of a second. Connelly was fourth in last year’s state meet in the 3,200 and seventh in the 1,600.^Bull blew by Connelly with 300 meters to go, then Connelly caught up and stayed close to the finish line. Bull’s winning time was the fifth best in Oak Harbor history.^The 1,600 relay of Bull, Nikki Gamble, Sheena Darling, and Bethany Veach posted its best time of the year at 4:08.69.^Gamble won the 1,600 in a season’s best of 5:15.5. For her efforts she was awarded the Sarah Wirth Memorial Trophy. The award was awarded for the first time this year to honor the late Oak Harbor athlete, who was girl athlete of the meet in 1998 and set meet records in the 1,600 and 800 that year.^Other Oak Harbor firsts came from Veach in the 400, Darling in the 300 low hurdles, Lesley TePaske in the pole vault, and the 800 relay. Veach won the 400 with a season best time of 59.36. Darling won the 300 hurdles in 48.33. Roundy was third in 49.59.^Felicia McClary, Kim Gabler, Christina Cooper, and Iesha Reaves comprised the winning 800 relay, which had a time of 1:53.29.^TePaske went 7-6 to tie for first place in the pole vault.^Roundy outclassed a field of athletes for larger schools to win the 100 high hurdles in 16.76.^The Oak Harbor boys finished with 107 points. Marysville-Pilchuck was first with 169.^Kulpa had personal bests in the 110 hurdles (15.92) and the 300 hurdles (41.16). His time in the 300 was the third fastest in Oak Harbor history. In the closest boys’ race of the day, Kulpa nipped Ben Grover of Vancouver’s Mountain View by 7/100s of a second.^Morgan won the 400 in 50.23 and teamed with Brandon Hill, Jared Jenkins, and Adam Shelly to win the 1,600 relay. The relay had a winning time of 3:29.69.^Comicho captured the pole vault at 11-0.^Coupeville, which was seventh with 36 1/2 points, showed its strength in the high jump as Wilson took first at 6-1 and Dustin Kuschnereit was third at 5-10.^Ian Mitchell of Coupeville took second in the 400 with a school record time of 51.04.^Joe Donnellon, who took third in the 1,600, had a personal best time of 4:34.8. He also had a personal best in 3,200, placing sixth in 10:06.2. Oak Harbor’s Eric Rooney was third in that event at 9:58.6. Matt Frost of Coupeville was fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:03.5.^Coupeville coach Gary Shelly was pleased with his team’s efforts.^Of the 12 schools, we were the only single A school there. I thought our kids did a pretty good job, Shelly said. We needed the competition to get rid of the big meet jitters because we have some important ones coming up.^Shelly said he enjoyed the competition with Oak Harbor and South Whidbey.^It’s fun to see all three schools from the island, who don’t compete against each other regularly, get together, Shelly said.
