When the Oak Harbor High School soccer team headed into this week, the prospects of picking up its first conference win didn’t look promising.
The Wildcats, anchored at the bottom of the Wesco standings with a 0-6 record (2-8 overall), were scheduled to face the league’s top two teams.
Tuesday, Oak Harbor played well but dropped a 2-0 home match as expected to Arlington (6-0-1, 8-2-1).
Then came the unexpected. Oak Harbor stunned previously unbeaten Marysville Getchell 1-0 Thursday at a windy, rainy Wildcat Memorial Stadium.
Oak Harbor has been undermanned and unlucky for most of the season, according to coach Mike Lonborg. Thursday, finally with a nearly complete and healthy lineup, the ball began bouncing the Wildcats’ way.
After the upset of the Chargers, Lonborg said, “We were lucky. Not lucky we won, but we finally had good luck as opposed to bad luck.”
Karma sided with the Wildcats as they survived being outshot by Marysville Getchell 22-4. In fact, Oak Harbor recorded only one shot on goal in the first half, but that’s all it needed.
Junior Caylie Etherington tucked a 25-yard shot just under the cross bar and just above the reach of the Charger keeper for the match’s lone score.
The Oak Harbor defense, lead by goalie Ebony Campbell, did rest, even though most of the match was played on Getchell’s offensive half.
“Ebony had the game of her life as a keeper,” Lonborg said. “Our defense was solid.”
He also liked how his team wasn’t cowed by the league leaders: “We played strong; we didn’t back off.”
The Wildcats have four matches remaining, and, with some momentum, securing one of the conference’s nine playoff spots is a reasonable goal, Lonborg said.
“With girls, it’s all about confidence. We have two or three winnable games left.”
Oak Harbor travels to Stanwood (4-2-1, 7-3-1) for a 6:30 p.m. match Thursday, Oct. 13.
