One comeback wasn’t enough for the Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team as the Wildcats lost 44-36 at Shorecrest Friday, Dec. 4.
The Scots started each half quickly, but Oak Harbor could only match the first spurt and was unable to overcome Shorecrest’s strong third quarter.
The Wildcats (1-1) continue nonleague action when they host Squalicum (1-2) at 7:15 Monday, Dec. 7.
Shorecrest zipped to a 12-3 lead, then Oak Harbor went on a 12-2 that spanned the first and second periods to take a 17-14 lead.
The Scots knotted the game at 20 at the half, then outscored Oak Harbor 12-6 in the third quarter to take control.
“We played really well,” Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins said. “We were aggressive, getting them into early foul trouble.”
However, Atkins noted, his team struggled at the foul line and with turnovers.
Oak Harbor connected on only seven of 22 fouls shots and finished with 23 turnovers.
Shorecrest was 10-for-18 at the line and had 16 turnovers.
“We are just starting to get the feeling of close games,” Atkins said, “and we will work out the turnovers and understand how to make foul shots in close games as we play more of them.”
Bryn Langrock led Oak Harbor with 14 points. Rashanna Graham added seven, Deja Bunch five, Julie Jansen five, Annabelle Whitefoot four and Janae Payne one.
Jansen also had seven rebounds and three blocks, Payne had three assists and Bunch had three steals.
