It was a tough weekend for the Oak Harbor High School wrestling team to be short-handed.
The Wildcats, nursing a handful of injuries to varsity wrestlers, lost 45-20 at Everett Friday, Jan. 22, in a Wesco North showdown, then dropped three of four matches and finished seventh out of eight teams at the Taking Down Pancreatic Cancer Duals at Hazen High School in Renton Saturday.
Oak Harbor’s Sam Zook (285 pounds) won by pin (1:03) at Everett, while Blake McBride (126, 8-2), Michael Lym (132, 10-6), Dymond Piper (152, 11-3) and Joshua Margraf (182, 5-2) each won by a decision.
At Hazen, the Wildcats lost to Skyline 38-33, Bonney Lake 61-6 and Hazen 32-29 and defeated Liberty 44-36.
Bonney Lake took the title.
“While we wrestled tough, we could not make up the 30 points we gave up,” coach Larry Falcon said.
Zook won both the matches he wrestled; he also received two forfeits. Piper and Nick Dugin (170) were both 2-1; Dugin added another win by forfeit.
Records for the other Wildcats, not including forfeit wins, were Justin Go (106), 1-3; William Nickelson (113), 1-3; Garrett Stahl (120), 2-2; McBride, 1-2; Lym, 1-3; Lucas Nickelson (138), 0-3; Corey Boler (145), 0-4; Joseph Field (160), 1-3; Margraf, 1-1; Caleb Fitzgerald (120), 2-2.
Oak Harbor forfeited at 195 and 220.
The purpose of the Taking Down Pancreatic Cancer Duals is to raise awareness and funds for the fight against pancreatic cancer. The disease claimed the life of Hazen coach Rory Magana’s father, Rod, a longtime Oak Harbor resident. Rory Magana is a graduate of Oak Harbor High School.
The Wildcats (1-2, 5-4) host Stanwood (0-2, 1-9) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26.
