It was an all-around miserable day for the Coupeville High School baseball team as it lost 15-5 at Lynden Christian Saturday, March 24, in a nonleague game.

The Wolves (0-2, 2-4) will need to bounce back in a big way with first-place Lakewood (5-0, 6-0) coming to town at 4 p.m. Monday, March 26. The teams will complete their two-game series Wednesday, March 28, in Lakewood.

Against Lynden Christian (4-1), Coupeville took the lead twice, going up 2-1 in the first and 4-2 heading into the bottom of the third. The Lyncs then scored 10 runs over the next three innings to pull away.

Coupeville coach Willie Smith said, “We played our poorest game of the year…We committed six errors, five in the first three innings.”

Offensively, the Wolves weren’t much better. Smith said, “Their pitchers were not very strong, but we were unable to make any adjustments and squandered bases-loaded situations twice, striking out there times in one inning.” The Wolves received 10 walks but mixed in only four hits, two each by Ben Etzell and Korbin Korzan. One of Etzell’s hits was a home run, and Korzan added an RBI.

Smith said, “They are a team that we will see again in the playoffs and is definitely a team that is not 10 runs better than us. So, hopefully, we will get back to playing strong on defense and doing a better job of executing offensively.”
