Sophomore Alex Smith produced the best finish of the four Oak Harbor High School runners competing in the state 3A cross country meet Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Smith placed 50th out of 162 runners from the 70 3A schools in Washington, clocking a 19:59.9. Her freshman sister Megan finished 80th (20:17.7).
Jordan Oakes of Holy Names Academy won the individual title in 17:44, helping her school claim the team title as well. Wesco schools Edmonds-Woodway and Shorecrest finished second and third.
For the boys, Oak Harbor juniors Tyler Grehan (17:23.6) and Michael Lym (17:29.3) placed 109th and 115th out of 164.
Lincoln’s James Mwaura was first in 15:32.9, and Spokane’s North Central High School was the team champion. Edmonds-Woodway was the top Wesco school, taking fourth.
Oak Harbor did not qualify for the team scoring.
“The kids ran really well,” coach Eric Peterson said. “We were pleased with how they finished out the season. As expected, the race went out fast the first mile, so it rewarded runners that ran their race and could control their excitement.
“The race was a good culmination for our athletes.”
Peterson added that “the most exciting part” is that the four runners are underclassmen and expected back next year.
