After suffering four one-goal losses in five matches, the Coupeville boys soccer team reversed the trend by defeating host Lakewood 2-1 Saturday, April 3.

The Wolves (2-3, 2-4) now take on Cedarcrest (3-2, 3-3) at Mickey Clark Field today, April 6, at 6 p.m.

After a string of heart-breaking losses, the victory was, according to coach Paul Mendes, a “big win for us.” He added, “It was exactly what we needed.”

The Cougars (2-3, 2-5) scored early, eight minutes into the match, but the Wolves battled back.

Jordan Lamb drilled in an unassisted goal from 15-yards out to tie the match, then the Wolves picked up the pace after the break.

Mendes said, “We played better in the second half, creating some good opportunities and our defense closed down their forwards better.”

It appeared the match may be headed to overtime, then Ben Hayes “smashed a turnaround volley from the right side,” according to Mendes, for the game-winner.

Mendes said, “The win has given us a great boost, and it was the first time in the history of the program that we have ever won in Lakewood. We are getting better with each game.”
