Two late goals by Coupeville wasn’t enough as the Wolves lost at Lakewood 3-2 Monday, April 11.
The Cougars (3-6, 2-5) scored just five minutes into the match and held the lead throughout.
Coupeville got goals from Grayson Knott and Ben Hayes deep in the match but couldn’t come all the way back.
Wolves’ coach Paul Mendes said, “We came out sharp and we were playing well, right from the opening whistle. Unfortunately, Lakewood scored the first goal, much against the run of play on a quick counterattack to set us back. We came very close to scoring a number of times, but went into halftime down 2-0.”
Mendes said his club made some adjustments at halftime and spend much of the second period at Lakewood’s end.
He said, “I was pleased with our overall effort, especially in the last 30 minutes. Even though we were down 3-0, our boys fought back and scored two quick goals to make the closing minutes a real nail biter. We had everyone up for some late corner kicks that produced dramatic stops by the Lakewood defense.”
The Coupeville offense “improved from the previous game,” according to Mendes.
He added, “I was impressed with the improved quality of our play and the character that they showed in not giving up.”
The Wolves (3-4-1, 3-4) go to Archbishop Thomas Murphy (6-1, 5-1) Wednesday, April 13, at 5 p.m.
