Two second-half goals by Stanwood’s Logen Flem carried the Spartans to a 3-2 win over the visiting Oak Harbor High School boys soccer team Tuesday, March 15.

In spite of the loss in the season opener, Oak Harbor coach Brian Thompson was pleased with his team’s play: “We had a great game.”

Michael Shevchuk put the Wildcats on top early with a goal at the 5-minute mark off an assist from Matt Jensen that was set up by a cross from Gavin Stewart.

Stanwood evened the score at the 25-minute mark, then Flem hit at the 50- and 65-minute marks to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead.

Vince Freitas, with Jensen assisting again, cut the lead to one, 3-2, in the 70th minute.

The defensive highlight of the game, Thompson said, was produced by ‘Cat keeper Tucker Lundstrom in the first half. Lundstrom blocked a penalty kick, a quick return shot and then a third which he knocked over the crossbar — three blocks in four seconds.

Stevie Bratt took over in goal in the second half and “did very well also,” Thompson said.

Oak Harbor hosts Shorecrest (1-0) Thursday, March 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the home and Wesco 3A opener.
