The Coupeville and Port Townsend high school boys soccer teams played to a 1-1 tie in the season opener for both schools Saturday, March 12, in Port Townsend.

No overtime period was played because the Wolves had to catch a ferry home.

Nevin Miranda scored at the 18-minute mark for Coupeville off an assist from Grayson Knott.

The Redskins countered with their goal two minutes later when Mitiku Little scored unassisted.

The Wolves put in a strong showing even though they had to overcome several hurdles.

In addition to poor weather conditions, a number of players were missing because of other school obligations, leaving Coupeville with one substitute.  Also, starting keeper Isaac Wacker sat the game because of an injury suffered in practice Friday.

Wacker was replaced by Nic Anthony, who “put in put in a fine performance,” according to coach Paul Mendes.

Mendes added “We started the game well, creating some quality chances early…A number of players stepped up for their first varsity minutes and played a lot because we only had one sub.  Our fitness level was tested. Our defense held up well, and our midfield showed lots of potential, putting together some good combinations.”

The Wolves are off until Tuesday, March 22, when they host Archbishop Murphy at 6 p.m.
