Justin Adams’ goal with eight minutes left lifted the Coupeville boys soccer team to a 3-2 win over visiting Lynden Christian and advanced the Wolves to the double-elimination portion of the district tournament.

Coupeville will now face No. 1 seed Meridian on the Trojans’ field Thursday, May 6, at 4 p.m. The Lyncs were eliminated with the loss.

King’s will meet the winner of Friday Harbor-Nooksack Valley in the other semifinal match.

Win or loss Thursday, the Wolves will play Saturday at Mount Vernon High School. If they win the Meridian match, they will play at 3 p.m.; if they lose, they will play at 1. Three teams will move on to the bi-district.

Lynden Christian’s Chad Heerspink scored first at the 15-minute mark.

Spencer Tack tied it up with a penalty kick at the 27th minute. In the second half, Tony Jansen scored unassisted to give the Wolves the lead at the 55-minute mark.

Ten minutes later, Heerspink struck again to even the score at 2.

Then came Adams’ goal, off an assist by Tack, at the 72nd minute. Tack drove down the right side, occupied two defenders, then sent a nice cross to Adams for the winning score.

Coupeville coach Paul Mendes said, “It was a good way to start the tournament. We know we can comeback and win.”
