The Coupeville High School soccer team, coming off several one-sided defeats, suffered a 1-0 shootout loss at South Whidbey Thursday, Sept. 22.
Outscored 25-0 in the previous three matches, the Wolves “showed up to play” against the Falcons, according to coach Mike Thornton, and “played very well,” but couldn’t quite pull out the win against their island rivals.
After battling through a tie in regulation and two overtimes, South Whidbey (2-2, 3-2) nipped the Wolves 3-2 in penalty kicks.
Thornton said, “I am proud of the no-quit attitude tonight.”
He lauded the play of goalie Grace LaPoint, center mid Amanda d’Almeida and defenders Haley Marx, Cassidi Rosenkrance and Christine Fields.
Thornton said, “We did come up short of a win but the effort and level of play that we showed was great to see.”
The Wolves (0-4, 1-4) host Granite Falls (2-1, 3-2) Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 6 p.m.
