The Stanwood High School softball team scored six late runs to pull away and defeat visiting Oak Harbor 7-1 Monday, April 7.

Oak Harbor pitcher Kat Martinez shut down Stanwood most of the day, surrendering only one earned run, but was a victim of nine errors.

The Spartans (1-1, 2-6) clung to a 1-0 lead heading into the fifth inning. With the help of the Wildcat mistakes, Stanwood scored two in the fifth and four more in the sixth to wrap up the Wesco North win.

“We looked, for the most part, like we belonged on the field,” Oak Harbor coach Todd Showalter said.

“Except for the problems later in the game, we played a lot better today,” he added.

Showalter liked the aggressiveness of his hitters, but “at times they were too aggressive,” chasing balls out of the strike zone.

“We left a lot of runners stranded,” he said.

Kelly Findley and Tricia Sarns had two hits each for Oak Harbor, and Nathalie Gotz added a single.

Oak Harbor (0-3, 1-7) plays a nonleague game at Arlington (2-0, 4-2) at 4 p.m. Friday, April 11.
