Fly Fish Club

The Whidbey Island Fly Fishing Club will meet Wednesday, April 11, at the Race Road Fire Station south of Coupeville.

The meeting, which is open to the public, starts at 6 p.m. for the social hour and fly tying demonstrations, and then at 7 p.m. Preston Singletary will discuss fishing for sea run cutthroat trout.

The Gallery Ladies Golf Association invites all women golfers to an informal meeting with refreshments 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Duffer’s Deli at the Gallery Golf Course.

This tee-off coffee will give newcomers a chance to meet club members and find out about the group and its golf schedule.

Summer play begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 17.

For more information, call Wayne Dorrenbacher at the Pro Shop (257-2178) or Dee de Leeuwe (678-4710).

Boat Safety Class

The Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 17 will offer a one-day class, About Boating Safely, Saturday, April 14, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Anacortes Senior Center.

It will also be offering a seven-week class, Boating Skills and Seamanship, on Tuesday and Friday evenings 7 to 9 p.m. beginning Tuesday, Sept. 11.

Both classes are designed to help people meet state boater education requirements and will provide the knowledge needed to obtain a Washington state boating license.

Topics in both classes include general information about boats and maintenance, navigation rules and aids to navigation and what to do in case of boating emergencies.  Many insurance companies offer boat insurance discounts on boating to people whom successfully complete either course.

The classes are free except for the cost of the book.

The Flotilla also provides free vessel safety checks for boat owners.

For information, to register or to schedule a vessel safety check, contact Larry Walker at 360-399-6447 or boating.class@gmail.com.

Orienteering

Central Whidbey has been selected as the site of the national 2012 Interscholastic and Intercollegiate Orienteering Championships April 21 and 22.

The competition, hosted by the Cascade Orienteering Club, will take place at Fort Ebey and Fort Casey state parks.

The national championships will draw approximately 400 competitors from around the country and will be using Camp Casey Conference Center as our Athletes’ Village for the weekend.

Rock On! Soccer Tournament

The eighth annual Rock On! 3-on-3 Soccer Tournament — which traditionally fields up to 100 teams — takes place Memorial Day weekend at the Fort Nugent fields.

Three-on-three soccer consists of two 12-minute halves with no stoppages of play (subs on the fly). The playing field is 30 yards wide by 40 yards long with a no-play zone in front of the goal instead of a goalie.

The event will also offer Goalie Wars where two players on a short field try to score as many goals as possible while simultaneously defending his or her own goal. The game is played in 2- or 3-minute halves (depending on the age group) with a 1-minute half-time.

The tournament is open to age divisions U8 through U18. Any group of kids may be combined into a team; players do not have to come from the same seasonal team, club or organization. Teams play to the oldest player’s age group; co-ed teams play in the boys division.

For their $125 registration fee, teams are guaranteed three games, tournament shirts and goodie bags. Registration deadline is May 18.
