Sail races at yacht club
In hopes of attracting beginners, single-handed sailors and two-person racing teams, the Sail Fleet from the Oak Harbor Yacht Club invites local sailors to join the Thursday night June Series of sailboat racing beginning Thursday, June 5.
Races start at 6 p.m. June 5, 12, 19, and 26 with a skippers’ meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. on June 5 downstairs at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club.
The races will use P.H.R.F./one design ratings. If you do not have a P.H.R.F. rating, one will be assigned to you. U.S. Sailing Rules 2005-08 will be in effect.

After the race series is complete, sailors and crew members are invited to the Oak Harbor Yacht Club for the trophy presentation on June 26.

Chum Run in Langley
Runners and walkers of all ages will gather at the Southwest Community Park at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 1, for the 12th annual Chum Run.
“Weather permitting, this should be the biggest turn out we’ve ever had”, said race director Frazer Mann. “It’s a fun event that everyone can enjoy, whether you’re an experienced runner or a casual walker or jogger.”
After the adult race, there will three heats of kid’s races “The Fry Run” for children 3 to 10 years old, with a prize for every child.
In recent years, the team competition has turned into a costume party with prizes for the best team costume and team name.
In addition to age group and team awards, there are prizes three deep for the top male and female middle and high school runners. This is an opportunity for school age runners to extend the track season and get some valuable prizes.

Signup for youth football
Registration is going on now for Oak Harbor Youth Football League, football as well as cheerleading.
Registrations can be found on the Web site at eteamz.com/oakharborfootball.
Registration forms are also available at both 7-Eleven stores, Big 5 Sporting Goods and at some of the school offices.
Football teams are limited to the first 30 players, so sign up soon.

Power squadron boating course
The Deception Pass Sail and Power Squadron presents America’s Boating Course on two consecutive Saturdays, June 14 and 21, at Skagit Valley College in Oak Harbor.
The class will meet from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Hayes Hall, room 113, just down the hall from the public library.
This eight-hour class covers boating basics including rules of the road, boating safety, required equipment, navigational aids, radio operations and much more.
Boaters who pass the course qualify for the new Washington State Boater Education cards, which are now available for $10 and a copy of your ABC certificate.
This card is required for operation of any power boat or personal water craft if you are 20 years of age or younger. It is also required for equipment rental at some locations.
The cost of the course is $25 per person. Spouses or family members who share a book are charged $15.

Basketball camp at OHHS
Coach Mike Washington, Oak Harbor High School head boys’ varsity basketball coach, and Justin Ronning, Oak Harbor High school boys’ assistant coach, will conduct a summer basketball camp June 23 through June 25 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Oak Harbor High School gym.
The camp is for players entering fourth through ninth grades and is designed as a camp to teach campers fundamentals they can use to enhance their game.
Many fundamentals will be covered throughout the three days including ball handling (passing, catching and dribbling); individual defense (stance, feet and hand positions, transition drills, closeouts, blocking out); footwork and shooting, to name a few.
The cost of the camp is $45 per player and all you’ll need is basketball shoes, a basketball and a good attitude.

Sign up for summer hoops
Oak Harbor High School girls basketball coach Brett McLeod, his coaching staff and players invite all girls in grades second through eighth to attend a summer basketball camp at the high school Monday through Thursday, July 28 to 31.
This is a chance to come out and work on your basketball skills under the guidance of the Wildcats’ coaches and players.
The cost of the camp is $55 per player, with a $10 discount if registered by June 1, and includes a long-sleeve T-shirt and a water bottle.
Registrations must be postmarked no later than June 15 to receive the gear.
This camp is for girls of all skill levels and will serve as a great way to have some fun this summer.

Boat fair at marina
The Deception Pass Sail and Power Squadron is planning a boat fair at the Oak Harbor Marina Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8.
The fair is free and open to the public.
Seminars, demonstrations boat safety inspections, children’s activities are planned, and there is something of interest for every member of the family.
The purpose of the fair is to promote boating safety and enjoyment while on the water.
