State championship meet next stop for Wildcats

Smollack sets new league record in 1,600 meters

Oak Harbor had five champions crowned at WesCo North Championships May 9 and 11 in Lake Stevens and after Wednesday’s preliminary round of the district meet in Shoreline, 10 athletes advanced to Friday’s final round.

Qualifying for the state meet are Will Hunter who won the district title in the shot put with a heave of 55-feet, 2-inches, high jumper Rodrick Rumble who leaped 6-feet, 2-inches to finish second and Donovan Hunt who went 20-feet, 4.75 inches in the long jump to place eighth.

Hunter said he didn’t do as well as he thought he could have in the shot put and was a little disappointed.

“I didn’t PR (personal record), but I won so I was happy with that, “ he said. “I have no idea about the state, I haven’t looked at the statistics. I think I’m right up there with them, I’m not sure though.”

Josh Dix rounded out Oak Harbor’s state qualifiers after the district’s first day of competition running the 1,600 meters in a time of 4:28.58 to finish seventh.

Already qualified for the state meet competition are league champions Mietra Smollack in the 800 and 1,600-meter runs, and Carson McKole in the 100-meter dash.

Casey Green will also be representing the Wildcats at the state meet in the boys 3,200 meter run.

With an eight-place finish the preliminary round of the 110 meter hurdles and a seventh-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles, Richard Chong qualified for Friday’s finals.

McKole won the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.08 in the preliminaries and teamed with Sarah Gordon, Kristen Roof and Smollack for a first-place finish and a trip to the district finals in the 4×200 relay with a time of 1:48.86.

The state meet will be held Friday and Saturday, May 25 and 26, in Pasco.

In the league meet, Oak Harbor put together some outstanding performances and were paced by Smollack who was the only double event winner for the Wildcats.

The junior won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:19.7, and set a stadium and WesCo North record in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:01.7. She is the number-one ranked runner in the WesCo in both events.

Just a sophomore, McKole captured a gold medal winning the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.12.

McKole is currently second among WesCo runners in the event.

McKole also finished third in the 200 meters with a clocking of 26.56, and the 4×200 meter relay team of Gordon, Roof, Smollack and McKole finished second in the event in a time of 1:49.8.

In field events, Rumble cleared a height of 6-2 in the high jump to bring home the gold medal, and Hunter had a championship throw of 55-2 in the shot put.

Rumble is the number-two ranked high jumper in the WesCo League and Hunter is number one throwing the iron ball.

Chong, a junior, also had a good meet league for the Wildcats, finishing third in the 110-meter hurdles at 15.72.

The impressive showings by Oak Harbor athletes came despite the fact a convenient facility to

practice on was a major problem during the 2007 season.

With construction of the new

Wildcat Memorial Stadium in progress adjacent to the high

school, the running track was one of the casualties when the earth movers and bulldozers took over

preparing the field for next fall’s

football season.

However, the Wildcats made the best of the situation, shuffling in between the track at North

Whidbey Middle School for running event practice while the discus, javelin and shot throwers worked out at the high school.

Obviously, all the hard work

paid off.

Complete district meets results will appear in the May 21 issue of the Whidbey News-Times.
