Sultan’s girls basketball team went on a 17-4 run in the second quarter to put visiting Coupeville in the rear view mirror in the Wolves 66-48 loss Friday, Jan. 15.

Megan Smith kept the Wolves close in the first quarter by scoring all of her team’s nine points, and Coupeville trailed by just four going into the second period.

The Turks then exploded to a 30-13 lead and finished the half up 34-19.

After the break, Sultan dashed any Coupeville hopes of a comeback by starting out the period on an 11-0 run.

Coupeville coach Blake Severns said the Wolves were getting “good looks” but “couldn’t hit anything early.”

Meanwhile the Coupeville defense had trouble slowing the Turks’ balanced attack. The Wolves went to a box-and-one defense in the second quarter to slow down Sultan star Bianca O’Hara, but the Turks responded by getting offense from three other players and finished with four players in double figures, led by O’Hara’s 19. Teammate Cassie Beucherie not only scored 13 points, but controlled the boards with 21 rebounds.

Smith finished the game with 23 points, six rebounds and four steals for Coupeville. Ashley Manker had 13 points, and Cassidi Rosenkrance added seven points and five assists. Marie Hesselgrave and Courtney Arnold had two points apiece, and Katie Smith one.

Sultan, who Severns called “the second best team in the league to Archbishop Thomas Murphy, raised its records to 3-1 and 6-4. Coupeville is now 2-4 and 7-5.

The Wolves finish the first round of Cascade Conference play Tuesday at home with Lakewood at 7 p.m.
