Oak Harbor finished fourth in the Northwest District 4A swim meet Saturday at Marysville-Pilchuck High School and will send three individuals and two relay teams to state.
Laura Rosen, Ciara Hu, and Akasha Trisler qualified to compete in individual events this Thursday through Saturday at the state meet at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Rosen and Trisler teamed up with Karina Concepcion and Tori Nickerson in the 200-yard freestyle relay to qualify; and Trisler, Nickerson, Hu, and Concepcion were also chosen to compete in the 200 medley relay at state.
Shorewood from the Western Conference South division, as expected, easily won the team title with 479 points. Marysville-Pilchuck finished second with 403 points, Jackson third with 321 and Oak Harbor fourth with 292.
Thirteen teams competed in the meet.
Oak Harbor coach Erika Miller said the results at the district meet were about what she expected; and she is not disappointed that her Wesco North, dual-meet championship team didn’t finish higher in the district standings.
She said, “The girls did a great job. We have had a great year; it has been a lot of fun. The kids are having fun and that’s what’s important.”
Oak Harbor finished ahead of Marysville-Pilchuck and Jackson in the Wesco North dual-meet standings, defeating both teams head-to-head while finishing the dual-meet season undefeated. The Wildcat squad, because it is deep in solid swimmers but short on elite swimmers, is more suited for dual meets.
At the district meet, the top 18 spots in individual events earned points. The winners were awarded 24, and the points decreased down to 1 for 18th. Relay points were doubled.
The top-three spots in each race qualified for the state meet. Swimmers could also qualify throughout the season for state by meeting preset times in each event, or be at-large choices to fill out the remaining state berths.
Freshman Rosen and sophomore Hu each met qualifing times earlier this fall. Rosen hit the mark in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley. Hu met the standard in the 100 fly and was an at-large pick for the 200 IM.
Freshman Trisler was one of only two Wildcat individuals to finish among the top three in a district meet race. She grabbed third in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.13.
The 100 back turned out to be Oak Harbor’s best race. Trisler’s teammate, sophomore Concepcion, was next in line in fourth at 1:04.86. Both times are personal bests. Senior Lily Doyle also picked up points for Oak Harbor by placing 12th in 1:13.21.
Oak Harbor also went 3-4 in the 200 individual medley. Rosen finished third in 2:15.42, just ahead of Hu at 2:16.02.
The 200 freestyle relay also finised in third place by combining to swim a 1:45.02. The squad included Concepcion (with a time of 26.46 her leg), Trisler (26.27), junior Nickerson (25.74), and Rosen (26.55).
Three Wildcats earned points in the 100 breaststroke. Nickerson came in seventh in 1:15.26 in a near personal-best time; senior McKenna Yocker was 14th in a personal-best 1:19.71; and junior Cassie Stanford was 18th in 1:12.62.
Both the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay teams ended sixth.
Trisler (backstroke leg in 30.41), Nickerson (breaststroke, 34.12), Hu (butterfly, 28.93), and Concepcion (freestyle, 25.98) swam the medley relay in 1:59.09.
In the 400 free relay, freshman Therese Desquitado (1:00.89), Hu (1:00.96), Doyle (58.08), and Rosen (57.76) joined forces to time in at 3:57.69.
In the 100 butterfly, Trisler nabbed eighth in 1:02.34 and Hu 11th in 1:03.8.
In the 50 free, Concepcion was ninth in 26.4 and Nickerson 11th in 26.98.
Desquitado, 11th in 1:00.37, and Yockey, 15th in 1:02.48, scored in the 100 free.
Rosen took 10th in the 500 free in 5:29.38, and Desquitado 15th in the 200 free in 2:15.69.
