“With the score just 4-2 during the second round of his match against Tan Le of Kamiak (2-2, 2-2), Oak Harbor wrestler Jon Garcia exploded on his opponent as he took Le from a head-to-head grapple to the mat with a swift twist move that put his opponent down for the pin.The match was one of just three pins on the night for Wildcats, but three technical decisions made the difference for the Cats as they stretched Kamiak to the limit, 40-21.The key tonight was Jon Garcia, said assistant coach Rick Karjalainen. The kid he wrestled was a state participant last year and we have been working on that twister. He hit it picture perfect.Two of the biggest matches of the evening for the Wildcats (5-0, 6-1) went to Brent Thompson and Jake Horn, who at 145 and 160 pounds respectively methodically took their opponents apart for technical decisions. First, Thompson won his match during the second round by a margin of 17-0. We were thinking that (Thompson’s contest) was going to be a tight match, said Karjalainen. He blew a very tough kid out and he has stepped up since the Christmas break. Then, following a pin by Brian Lang at 152 pounds, Horn defeated his opponent, 17-2 during the final seconds of the third. I have never done a T-bar before and it worked pretty good and I thought I had him pinned in the second round but I got five points instead, said Horn. We got a lot of techs so that helped a lot tonight.Brent Lang followed Horn and Thompson’s example by gaining a technical decision himself at 171 pounds.The four matches took the Cats from being down, 15-13 to up by 19 and assured Oak Harbor of the WesCo victory. David Kazman and Chris Whiteman wrestled the next two matches for the Cats but lost in grueling matches. Oak Harbor finished the night with a great win and some revenge as Sean Hogan, sporting a new bleached and shorter hair cut, grappled with Rober Dockter for the first two rounds that ended in a stalemate. But when the third opened Hogan put his opponent down and gained the pin with just 1:40 left in the third.Last year he beat me, he had more speed and more stamina than I did, said Hogan. This year I am a lot bigger and stronger and my conditioning really helped. We knew that if he could keep it tight in the first round and maybe get an escape in the second, we told him to wait until the guy tries to bust you down, said Karjalainen. When the guy tried to bust across he hit that roll of his and it was all over but the slap.At 130 pounds Danny Wichers continued to roll towards another birth at state as he took his opponent down, 10-0, for the major decision, while Micha Pruss gained a decision over Kamiak wrestler Jack Landon. The Oak Harbor freshmen, Dale Webb at 103 pounds, Kyle Isaacson at 119 pounds and Steve Lemme at 125 pounds all had great matches according to Karjalainen despite losing by decision. Isaacson, who according to Karjalainen has improved a lot this year so far, was down 8-3 coming out of the first round but battled back. The match was stopped repeatedly because Dustin Byers of Kamiak had a nose bleed. But during the third round Isaacson came with in one point of tieing Byers but lost, 12-11.Isaacson is going to be one bright star, said Karjalainen. He cut down to 119 and that kid is looking good. All three wrestlers took their opponents to the limit going three rounds and each having a substantial lead at one point in each their matches. Kamiak is a very respectable team, said Karjalainen.
