Coupeville knew going into its tennis match with visiting South Whidbey Tuesday, Sept. 28, that it would have its hands full, and they were right as the Falcons won 5-0.
Although his team was blanked, Coupeville coach Ken Stange was pleased with his young team’s effort: “I’ve always thought that there is more to be learned from a losing match than a winning match. My hope is that we can take the lessons learned from our beating and apply them to the rest of the matches this season.”
South Whidbey’s Riley Newman, a former 2A state champion, defeated Ben Hayes in No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0. Chase Bates dropped the second singles match 6-1, 6-1.
In first doubles action, Nate Lamb and Nic Anthony, playing together for the first time because of an injury to Sam Weaver, Lamb’s usual partner, fell 6-1, 6-4.
Larry Hurlburt/Ben Wehrman (6-1, 6-0) and Jason Knoll/Brandon Kelley (6-0, 6-0) lost in second and third doubles.
The Wolves take on the Falcons again Friday, Oct. 1, at South Whidbey at 3 p.m. and then travel to the Friday Harbor Tournament Saturday, Oct. 2.
