Two close losses this week extended the Oak Harbor boys tennis team’s losing streak to five matches as the Wildcats fell on the road to Lynnwood and Marysville-Pilchuck.
The Royals edged Oak Harbor 4-3 Tuesday and the Tomahawks won 5-2 Wednesday.
The difference in the Lynnwood (1-5) match came down to the Wildcats dropping two of three highly contested contests. Coach Horace Mells said, “It was a close contest that could have gone either way.”
In third singles, Max O’Dell was nipped 3-6, 7-5, 6-7(6).
In first doubles, Geoff Worley/Eric Berner fell 7-6(3), 3-6, 5-7. The Wildcat pair was leading 5-2 in third set before their opponents rallied for the win.
Oak Harbor grabbed one of the close matches when Will Southard/Michael Serna took second doubles 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Brandon Vagt (6-2, 6-3) and David DeGuzman (6-0, 6-1) won the second and third singles matches.
No. 1 singles player Ben Cardinal (6-4, 6-1) and the third doubles duo of Ben Harrison/Maric Sobreo (6-3, 7-5) lost.
Against Marysville-Pilchuck (3-3), Oak Harbor suffered two other close losses that turned the match in the Tommies’ favor.
Vagt was edged 7-5, 6-7(5), 5-7 in third singles, and Berner/Serna lost 3-6, 6-3, 4-6 in second doubles.
Oak Harbor got wins from Josh Evans (6-3, 6-1) and DeGuzman (6-4, 6-2) in second and fourth singles.
Cardinal (6-0, 6-2) dropped the top singles match, and O’Dell/Worley (6-4, 6-4) and Harrison/Southard (6-3, 7-6(5)) lost in first and third doubles.
Oak Harbor (1-5) plays at Glacier Peak (4-2) Thursday, Sept. 23, at 3:45 p.m.
