A 4-1 win at Friday Harbor Saturday, Oct. 2, wrapped up the 2010 league championship for the Coupeville boys tennis team.
The win assured the Wolves of winning the best-of-three series with Friday Harbor that determines the champion of their two-team league. Coupeville also took the first meeting 4-1 earlier this fall; the two teams will meet again Friday, Oct. 15, in Coupeville at 3 p.m.
A tournament was originally scheduled for last Saturday; when it was cancelled, Friday Harbor and Coupeville moved their Oct. 7 match to that date, setting up the Wolves’ conference securing win.
Coach Ken Stange said Saturday’s match was “closer than the scores showed.”
Ben Hayes looks to be the district’s stop singles player as he won the No. 1 match 6-3, 6-1.
Chase Bates, who Stange said was “relentless,” won 6-4, 6-0 in second singles.
In the best match of the day, Nate Lamb and Nic Anthony squeaked out a 7-6(7-4), 7-6(7-1) win in first doubles.
Jason Knoll and Brandon Kelley bounced back to win third doubles 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Larry Hurlburt and Ben Wehrman fell in second doubles 6-4, 7-5.
In nonleague action, Coupeville dropped a 5-0 match at South Whidbey Friday, Oct. 1.
To accommodate the lineups of both teams, the clubs played just one singles match and our doubles matches.
Hayes lost the singles bout 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles, Bates/Lamb (6-2, 6-3), Hurlburt/Anthony (6-3, 6-1), Knoll/Kelley (6-1, 6-4) and Esteban Hernandez/Konrad Borden (6-0, 6-0) lost.
