A late-game spurt wasn’t enough for the Coupeville High School girls basketball team as the Wolves fell 34-27 at South Whidbey Tuesday, Jan.3.

Coach Jackie Bykonen said, “We came out and decided to play smart and intense basketball the last five minutes of the game.”

Coupeville outscored the Falcons 12-8 in the final period behind a pressure defense, but trailed 26-15 heading into the final eight minutes.

After leading 7-6 after the first period, the Wolves struggled in the second as South Whidbey (4-0, 6-4) went into the locker room with a 20-10 lead, thanks to a well-executed half-court offense.

Bykonen said her team was hurt by hitting only six of 16 free throws and “unforced errors and lack of intensity until the last part of the game.”

Cassidi Rosenkrance scored 10 points for Coupeville, Jai’Lysa Hoskins seven, Katie Smith three, Bessie Walstad three, Lauren Escalle two and Bree Messner two.

The Wolves (0-4, 1-7) go to Granite Falls (2-2, 6-4)Thursday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m.
