Although only three team members scored, the Coupeville High School boys track team placed fourth in the 21-team tri-district meet last week at King’s School in Seattle.

The Coupeville girls finished 13th in the team standings, and the Wolves will send five athletes — three boys and two girls — to the state meet at Eastern Washington University May 27 and 28.

With Mitch Pelroy covering the sprints, Tyler King the distance races and Hunter Hammer the weights, the Coupeville boys scored 51 points in the big meet. Host King’s High School won with 144.

King’s also won the girls meet with 96.5 points; Coupeville tallied 20.

Pelroy, King and Kyra Ilyankoff all earned district titles; the top five in each event earned state berths.

King won the 3,200 (9:25.77) and finished second in the 800 (1:55.8) and 1,600 (4:22.54).

Pelroy raced to first in the 400 (51.87) and was seventh in the 200 (23.83) and eighth in the 100 (11.79).

Hammer was third in both the discus (148) and shot put (49-04.5). His discus effort was a new school record, breaking his own mark of 145-08.

Ilyankoff won the javelin (117-09) and was fifth in the shot (31-05.75).

Madison Tisa-McPhee earned the other points for the Coupeville girls with a fifth in the 100 hurdles (16.4) and a seventh in the 300 hurdles (48.94).

Sophomore Tisa-McPhee will make her state debut this year.

King is the defending 3,200 and 1,600 champion and finished second in the 800 last year.

Hammer was eighth in the shot in 2010 and Pelroy ran on the 4×400 relay at state last year.

Ilyankoff placed second in the javelin as a freshman and third as a sophomore before missing the 2010 meet recovering from a knee injury.

Heading into this year’s state meet, King has the state’s best 1A 1,600 time (4:12.97) and the second best in the 800 (1:55.8) and 3,200 (9:21.67).

Hammer is sixth in the shot (51-3.75) and eighth in the discus (148), and Pelroy is eighth in the 400 (51.87).

Ilyankoff is ranked eighth in the javelin (117-10).
