Track: King, Hammer help Wolves place 7th at state

Powered by seniors Tyler King and Hunter Hammer, the Coupeville boys placed seventh out of Washington’s 65 1A schools at the state track meet at Eastern Washington University in Cheney Friday and Saturday, May 27 and 28.

The Wolves compiled 28 points in the meet won by Cascade Conference rival King’s High School with 74.

The Coupeville girls, behind senior Kyra Ilyankoff third career state medal, finished 30th with six points. Bellevue Christian took the girls title with 61 points.

King had an outstanding, yet frustrating, meet, finishing second in all three distance races by less than a combined four seconds.

For the second year in a row, he was runner up in the 800. This year he ran 1:57.14 and was nipped by league rival Hap Emmons from King’s who ran 1:56.89. Emmons was third in 2010.

The new kid on the block, Todd Jackson from Elma, denied King the chance to repeat as the state 1,600 and 3,200 champion.

Elma dropped to 1A this year after competing as a 2A school in the past. Jackson won the 3,200 title in 2A last year and was fourth in the 1,600.

Jackson edged King 4:18.61 to 4:19.98 in the 1,600 and 9:37.1 to 9:38.42 in the 3,200.

King topped Jackson and Emmons, who finished second and fourth, while winning the state 1A cross country championship last fall.

For the second week in a row, Hammer broke his own discus record, this time flipping the discus 150-02 to earn eighth place and to break his old school mark of 148.

He also placed sixth in the shot put at 50-05; he was eighth in the shot last spring.

Junior Mitch Pelroy was fifth in his heat and ninth overall in the 400 in 51.91.

Ilyankoff threw a season-best 128-04 to place fourth in the javelin. She was second as a freshman and third as a sophomore before missing the meet last year with a knee injury. Ilyankoff added a 16th in the shot put (30-07.5).

Sophomore Madison Tisa-McPhee placed eighth in the 100 hurdles in 16.64 in her state debut.
