"Oak Harbor, Coupeville turn in strong showings in this week's meets"

“Oak Harbor took on one of its toughest track and field opponents of the year right off the bat Thursday.The Wildcats couldn’t overcome Sehome’s team depth – the boys fell 77 to 59, and Sehome took the girl’s team scoring 91-50.But some individual efforts were stellar, particularly on the track. And it was far from a blowout, even though the Sehome girls are favorites for a state trophy this year, Oak Harbor coach Seth Hodges said, and its boys will be top contenders for the league crown.Molly Bull led the Wildcats on her home track, winning the 800-meters in her first attempt with a scorching 2:27.3 time and taking first in the long jump. Nikki Gamble won the 3,200 meters in 12:02.7 and took second in the 1,600 in 5:32.6. In the field, Lauren Lombardo grabbed firsts in the shot put and javelin.There were also some hopeful signs for the future, coach Seth Hodges said. Junior Chauntelle Johnson, running against last year’s 2nd-place finisher at state, Rose Brakel-Pierce, ran a season-best 64.7 in the 400 meters, beating her best times from last year.The boys spread their success evenly on the track, with firsts from Jeremy Morgan in the 100 meters; Scott Sebens in the 1,600; Brandon Hill in the 400; Stefan Kulpa in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles; Adam Shelly in the 800; Eric Rooney in the 3,200; and the 4×400 relay. Kulpa took second in the high hurdles, and freshman Aidrien Wilkins won the high jump with a leap of 5-6.Wolves finish strongAt LaConner Thursday, Coupeville’s girls notched a strong second-place finish in a 10-team field, led by strong performances from Brianne King, Yashmeen Knox and Jess Roundy.King won the 800- and 3,200-meter runs. Knox took first in the high jump and javelin, and Roundy won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.7. The girls 400-meter relay team also notched a win.Mount Vernon Christian won the girls meet handily with a 175 score. Coupeville grabbed second with a 72, edging third-place LaConner by four.On the boys’ side, Joe Donnellon took first in the 3,200-meter run.
