Jillian Pape, Olivia Tungate and Molly Vagt each placed in two individual events and swam on two placing relay teams with Taliah Black to carry the Oak Harbor High School swim and dive team to 10th place in the state 3A meet Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11 and 12, at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
The Wildcats, who finished fourth in the district meet, scored 78 points at state to place ahead of two teams (Shorecrest and Snohomish) that they trailed at district. Squalicum, the District 1 champion, took sixth at state with 132.5 points; Lakeside of Seattle claimed the title with 244.
Tungate, a junior, posted the best Oak Harbor finish, grabbing fourth in the 100 backstroke in 57.93. Janelle Rudolf of Bellevue won the event in 56.34.
Tungate added a ninth in the 100 free in 53.87. Sydney Wong of Squalicum was first in 52.28.
Pape, a junior, was sixth in the 50 freestyle (24.59) and 13th in the 100 butterfly (1:00.31). The events were won by Rudolf (23.59) and Kelly Morgan of Mead (56.06).
Vagt, a senior, placed 14th in the 200 freestyle (1:59.33) and 15th in the 500 free (5:17.14). Winners were Morgan (1:51.07) and Seattle Prep’s Cameron Smith (4:58.59).
Tungate, junior Black, Vagt and Pape combined to finish sixth in the 200 medley relay (1:51.87), which was won by Bellevue (1:46.48).
Pape, Tungate, Black and Vagt were 14th in the 200 free relay (1:42.93). Lakeside captured first (1:37.71).
“I’m very proud of how the girls swam at state this year,” coach Jenny Butler said. “They worked hard, were focused and swam extremely well. These girls are not only talented swimmers, they are also strong students. Many of them take AP classes, keep their grades up and compete at a high level in a very time-consuming, demanding sport.”
