Olivia Tungate of the North Whidbey Aquatic Club finished in the top five in six events, winning two, at the Pacific Northwest Swim Long Course Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way July 23-27.
Four other NWAC athletes competed in the meet, and they were led by Jerrin-James Concepcion, who placed 15th in the 200-meter backstroke in the boys 11/12 division with a personal best of 2:44.31.
Tungate’s impressive performance earned her a berth in the Western Zone Championships, which will be hosted by PNS Aug. 6-9. Twelve western states will compete in the meet.
Earlier this year, Tungate was named to the Pacific Northwest Swim Select Team.
Tungate, 13, set two team records during the meet and received a recruiting letter from UCLA after her stellar effort.
Swimming in the girls 13/14 age group, Tungate won the 200-meter butterfly (2:23.23) and 100 backstroke (1:07.66).
In the preliminaries for the 100 backstroke, Tungate posted a 1:07.34, topping Emily Huffer’s NWAC team record of 1:08.25.
Tungate swam second in the 200 backstroke (2:25.34).
She finished fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:06.65) and 200 individual medley (2:29.67).
Tungate set a NWAC record in the 100 fly prelims, clocking a 1:06.59 and smashing Laura Rosen’s mark of 1:08.63.
Tungate placed fifth in the 400 IM (5:21.91) and 11th in the 400 free (4:46.87).
Part of her success can be attributed to strength training with Kyle Isaacson at Rep Fitness, according to her father, Cliff Tungate.
Olivia Tungate said she was “glad to drop time” (she PR’ed in 10 swims) and was happy with the overall results, but she was disappointed she did not trim more time in her best event, the 200 butterfly. With her 2:23.23, she cut nearly a second off her previous best but was shy of the junior national qualifying time of 2:19.
“But it was progress,” Cliff Tungate said.
Her goal is to meet the national qualifying time by December.
Tungate, who carries a 4.0 grade point average, will be a freshman at Oak Harbor High School this fall.
