Sultan spoiled Coupeville High School’s homecoming football game Friday, Oct. 5, by whipping the Wolves 38-6.
With that special occasion out of the way, the Wolves (0-2, 3-3) can now focus on another. Coupeville travels to South Whidbey (1-1, 4-2) for this year’s rivalry clash at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12. The Wolves own a two-year win streak and rights to “The Bucket” in the rivalry.
Sultan, behind quarterback Jensen Webster, took control from the beginning to cruise to the win. The Turks carried a 20-0 lead into the locker room and played add-on after the break.
The Wolves didn’t score until late in the game when Sean Toomey-Stout scampered in from the 10.
Webster completed six of 12 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 134 yard on 18 carries and scored twice, to finish with 265 of the Turks’ 369 yards of offense.
Sultan limited Coupeville to 164 yards. Toomey-Stout rushed for 62 yards on 16 carries.
Dawson Houston hit two of six passes for 33 yards before leaving with an injury. Shane Losey competed five of 11 in relief for 26 yards.
Houston was one of several injured players, according to coach Marcus Carr.
“It was a tough homecoming game,” Carr said. “Sultan controlled the ball with their running attack. We were unable to get anything going offensively.”
The Wolves’ defense was led by Alex Turner, who “turned in an outstanding effort with 10 tackles,” according to Carr.
“Our boys kept competing hard to the end,” Carr said. “We just have to rebound and get ready for our rivalry game against South Whidbey.”
