Unselfish play led to balanced scoring and a 78-58 win for the Coupeville boys basketball team over visiting Granite Falls Tuesday.

The Wolves handed out 20 assists and six players scored at least eight points as Coupeville (8-3, 13-4) remained in second place in the Cascade Conference. The Tigers remained winless in 16 games.

Coupeville finishes the regular season with home games with Sultan (2-7, 3-12) Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. and Lakewood (4-5, 6-9) Friday at 7.

Just over a minute into the game, Chad Brookhouse’s bucket gave Coupeville the lead 4-3 and it never trailed again.

The Wolves moved out in front 22-10 by the end of the first quarter, however the visitors twice made runs to stay in the game until late in the third quarter.

Erik King scored off a steal to start the second quarter and Coupeville had its biggest lead, 24-10. Fouls then sent several Wolves to the bench and the Tigers to the line.

With 1:15 left in the half, the Coupeville lead with down to one, 33-32. The Wolves finished the period on a 9-1 run to give them a 42-33 lead at the break.

By halftime, starters Brookhouse and Jason Bagby had three fouls and JD Wilcox four.

Coupeville corrected the problem and committed only four team fouls the entire second half.

Granite Falls hung around much of the third quarter, thanks largely to Max Whitt’s three 3-pointers, but the Wolves slowly pulled away for the comfortable win.

Bagby and Hunter Hammer recorded double-doubles. Bagby had 16 points and 11 rebounds; he also had four steals. Hammer finished with 14 points and 13 boards.

Tim Walstad came off the bench to score nine points. Coupeville coach Randy King said Walstad “gave us a little spark; I thought he played well.”

Brookhouse scored 13 points and dished out four assists, and Wilcox had 12 points and four assists.

Ian Smith handed out a team-high seven assists and scored four points, and Erik King added eight points.

Coupeville controlled the boards 41-27, and its defense produced 13 steals and 16 turnovers.
