Vashon Island used a shootout to nip the Coupeville High School soccer team 2-1 Tuesday, March 29, at Mickey Clark Field.
The teams were tied 1-1 after regulation and failed to score in 10 minutes of overtime.
The Pirates outshot the Wolves 6-5 in the shootout to cement the win.
With about six minutes left in the match, Coupeville keeper Connor McCormick was ejected for an inadvertent hand ball outside the box. Jose Marcos took over in the goal, but the Wolves were forced to play a man short the remainder of the match.
In reference to the red card on McCormick, Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson said, “The ball was struck towards his head and he put an arm up to protect his head and the ball hit his arm. It was an unfortunate call.”
Vashon controlled the first 10 minutes of the match, but the Coupeville defense anchored by McCormick denied the Pirates.
From that point, play evened out. The Wolves saw several excellent scoring opportunities in the latter part of the first half go sailing above the bar.
Early in the second half, Coupeville’s Abraham Leyva Elenes scored off an assist from Zane Bundy.
Soon after, the Pirates (3-2-1) knotted the match and eventually won it in the shootout.
Coupeville (0-4-1) hosts Forks (1-3) at 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 4.
