It was mixed feelings, literally, for the Oak Harbor High School tennis team at the second day of the Wesco North singles tournament Thursday, May 14, at Stanwood.

The emotional high was provided by junior AnnaBelle Whitefoot who entered the tournament as the ninth seed but placed third and earned a trip to the district tournament.

The low came through senior Makenzie Perry, the No. 2 seed, who was sick and suffered through a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Jacey Wreggelsworth of Arlington, the third seed, and then defaulted to Whitefoot in a consolation match.

Perry finished sixth; the top four advance to the district playoffs.

Perry, who lost only three times all season, was ill all week with a stomach virus, according to coach Horace Mells.

“It was noticeable during her first match on Tuesday that she was not 100 percent, but she prevailed,” Mells said. “She was feeling pretty good on Wednesday and ready to go, but on Thursday morning she started having complications with a sore throat which worsen during her match. She also had some difficulties breathing and clearly did not perform up to her potential, but she continued to battle.”

Whitefoot started the tournament Tuesday by slipping by the No. 8 seed and losing to the No. 1 seed.

Thursday in the consolation bracket, she topped Ferndale’s Juliana Gholam, the fifth seed, 6-4, 6-0.

After the forfeit over Perry, she defeated Marysville Getchell’s Cortni Huffman, the sixth seed, 6-0, 6-2 to place third.

The district tournament is 1 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, May 19 and 20, at Arlington. The top three finishers in singles and doubles qualify for the state tournament.
