The Oak Harbor High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps built some momentum for its only home meet of the season with a solid performance Saturday, Feb. 10, at Port Angeles High School.
Wildcat Battalion will host the fourth and final regular season drill meet Saturday, Feb. 24, at Oak Harbor High School.
Oak Harbor will be joined by seven other schools from the Puget Sound area with Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps JROTC units for the conference match.
The match will also be the final opportunity for teams to qualify for the regional drill meet Saturday, March 17, at Marysville-Pilchuck High School. The squads in each category must place in the top three — determined by points accumulated over the four regular season matches — to qualify for the regional meet.
After last Saturday’s competition, Wildcat Battalion is first in unarmed drill team, sporter air rifle, precision air rifle, dual armed exhibition drill and dual unarmed exhibition drill.
The Oak Harbor armed drill team, physical strength team and second dual armed exhibition drill team are all currently in second place, while color guard No. 2 and the second dual unarmed exhibition drill team are in fourth.
The physical strength team No. 2 sits in fifth.
At Port Angeles, the rifle teams were right on target as each finished first to lead Wildcat Battalion in the match.
Three individuals also claimed first for Oak Harbor: Rylan Quiros, sporter rifle (out of 57 shooters); Lauren Crossley, precision rifle (out of nine); and Dylan Sanchez, male physical strength.
In other team action, color guard No. 2, unarmed drill, armed drill and physical strength No. 1 all finished second; and color guard No. 1 and physical strength No. 2 placed fifth.
In individual competition, Ivan Snyder, James Lohmann and Trevor Westman finished 2-3-4 behind Quiros in sporter rifle; while Jaelyn O’Hara, Jason Montano and Cierra LeGendre went 2-4-5 behind Crossley in precision rifle.
The pairs of Ethan Macaluso/Cameron Cecka and Joseph Dixon/Kyle Torres placed second and third in dual armed exhibition drill, as did Manik Bains/Kanoa King and Jhaylan Munger/Justin Go in unarmed exhibition drill.
Tristen Macaluso took second in armed drill team commander, and Bain was third in unarmed drill team commander.
King placed third in male physical strength.
“All the teams performed well,” Chief William Thiel said. “The teams will have to practice hard for the final meet. That meet will determine who the division champions are and who will attend the regional meet.”
