The Oak Harbor High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps finished second to Port Angeles in the 31-unit JROTC regional tournament at Rogers High School in Puyallup Saturday, March 18.
Wildcat Battalion, which took the title last year, has finished in the top three the past eight years.
The regional meet, with about 900 competitors, included JROTC units from Oregon City to Oak Harbor. The conference’s 31 teams are split into four divisions during the regular season, and Oak Harbor earned the seven-team Olympic Division championship this year.
Leading the way for the Wildcat at the regional tournament were the rifle teams. Both the sporter and precision units brought home gold medals. It was the fourth consecutive championship for the sporter team and the second for the precision squad. Senior team members Mia Gehrmann and Austin McBride finished their four-year careers undefeated in division and conference team competition.
Individually among the shooters, Elena Flake finished first and Julia Flake sixth in precision, while Lauren Crossley was third and Steven Richards fourth in sporter.
Richards played a baseball game for Oak Harbor in Hanford Friday night, drove to Puyallup to shoot and then returned to Hanford Saturday for another ball game.
In other team competitions, the Oak Harbor physical fitness No. 1 team placed third and the No. 2 team seventh. The unarmed drill team took fifth and the armed drill team sixth. In color guard, No. 2 was fifth and No. 1 eighth.
In dual unarmed exhibition drill, Kanoa King and Deither Tabucol captured third and Kelvin Canonizado and Jhaylan Munger nabbed sixth.
In individual action, Jonathan Francisco was second in armed drill team commander, Noel Pangilinan was fourth in unarmed drill team commander and Chante Powell was fifth in physical strength (ironwoman).
