The Oak Harbor boys sit in first place and the girls in third after the first day of the Western Conference track championships Wednesday, May 8, at Shoreline Stadium.

The second and final day of the meet begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

The finals in five events were concluded Wednesday along with preliminaries in the others.

The Oak Harbor boys lead the 10-team field with 57 points, 20 better than second-place Stanwood.

Shorecrest leads the girls with 42 points, Glacier Peak has 39 and Oak Harbor 24.

The Wildcat boys finished first and fourth in both the high jump and shot put.

Chris Hailer won the high jump (6-04) and Jacob Olsen finished fourth (5-10).

In the shot, Jeremy Foster took first (49-11) while Dayne Herron grabbed fourth (47-03.5) and Michael Laningham sixth (42-11.25).

John Rodeheffer (4:28.61) and Clayton Richardson (4:30.32) went 2-3 in the 1,600 meters, the only boys running event final.

Oak Harbor could have a tough time holding on to first with only two runners qualifying for the finals in six events. Richard ran fifth in the 800 (2:04.03) and Patrick Mayer eighth in the 300 hurdles (44.62).

The top eight earn berths in the finals.

Both relays qualified with the sixth-best time. Anthony Alexander, Julian Faralan, Robert Miller-Hubbel and Carlton Johnson ran the 4×100 in 46.05; and Noel Cheeseboro, Richardson, Josiah Welch and Josh Jepson ran the 4×400 in 3:42.08.

Ciera Wiser led the girls with a second in the javelin finals (106), and Taylor Deconzo placed fifth (99-01).

In the lone girls running final, Christina Wicker (5:13.64) and Alex Laiblin (5:17.43) ran 4-5 in the 1,600.

Wicker had a good day in the preliminaries, posting the best time in the 800 (2:23.45) and third best in the 400 (1:00.68).

Boys pole vault: 10, Connor Paramenter, 10; 13, Keenan Davilla, 9-06.

Boys long jump: 15, Allen Hills, 18-10.25; 19, Olson, 18-01.5; 22, Hailer, 17-01; 23, Tanner Walker, 17-00.5.

Girls 1,600: 15, Jonalynn Horn, 5:31.84; 18, Marisa Sligh, 5:39.84; 20, McKenzie Schneider, 5:43; 24, Lauren Vagt, 6:02.43.

Girls discus: 12, Deconzo, 84-02; 20, Erika Bryan, 73-03.

Girls javelin: 15, Jinai Guzman, 78.

Girls long jump: 19, Priya Osborne, 14-01.
