Misery loves company.

The Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team has struggled all season with shooting, and Thursday it ran into someone who shares its shooting blues — Stanwood.

Oak Harbor defeated the cold-shooting Spartans 49-41 here Tuesday.

The win set the Wildcats’ record at 3-3 in league and 6-4 overall. Oak Harbor goes to Marysville-Pilchuck (6-1, 8-3) Monday, Jan. 11, to take on the second-place Tomahawks.

In the win over Stanwood, Oak Harbor shot a respectable (for them) 35 percent while the Spartans shot a miserly 22 percent (15-66).

Although the ‘Cats won the battle of the boards 47-38, Stanwood was able to grab 18 offensive rebounds. That allowed the Spartans to put up 18 more shots than Oak Harbor, but they were unable to convert on many of the second- and third-chance opportunities.

While Stanwood’s offense sputtered, Oak Harbor had its own offensive woes. The Wildcats went up 10-7, then didn’t score again for seven minutes and found themselves down 16-11.

A scoring flurry in the final two minutes of the half put Oak Harbor into the lead 20-18 at the break.

Stanwood took the lead 30-29 with 40 seconds left in the third period then hit its own scoring drought. The ‘Cats went on a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to build a 41-30 cushion.

Jessica Denmon scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Nicole Mowbray hit for 15 points, seven coming in the decisive fourth quarter.

Oak Harbor got a boost from the return of Janelle Yoshimoto who had been out all season with an Achilles injury. She scored eight points, and the point guard “helped break pressure” with her ball handing, according to coach Brett McLeod.

Emilie Renninger and Jessica James scored three points each, and the Wildcats got two points each from Clarissa Abadesco and Naomi Walker.
