Oak Harbor continued its impressive start in high school soccer with a 3-0 win at Lynnwood Tuesday, Sept. 16.
The win was the Wildcats’ third straight to open the season; Oak Harbor has outscored its opponents 12-1 in the three matches.
The Wildcats’ offense is being powered by their young guns. Sophomore Mary Johnston netted six of the dozen goals, and sophomore Jennifer Turnek, sophomore Lydia Peplinski and freshman Caylie Etherington have hit two each.
Johnston struck first against Lynnwood, scoring minutes into the match. Later in the first half, Turnek tallied “off a 1-2” with Etherington, according to coach Mike Lonborg.
Peplinski scored off an assist from Etherington in the match’s final minutes.
Ayla Muller played the first half and Makenzie Perry the second in the goal to record the shutout.
“Both keepers did a phenomenal job communicating and were aggressive with Lynnwood’s fast-pace forwards,” Lonborg said. “The defense was tight and did a great job blocking through balls and working on setting up counter attacks.
“The game was aggressive and we expect to see more of the same in conference play. Last night, the effort was all there, just not as clean as we can play. Which is great to get a wins and still have room to improve. We are definitely growing stronger as a team; we just need to stay healthy.”
The match with Lynnwood (0-3) was a non-conference contest; the two schools will hook up in a league match Oct. 27.
The Wildcats begin Wesco action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at home against Stanwood.
