The Oak Harbor High School soccer team clipped a four match losing string with a 3-3 tie at Arlington Monday, April 3.
The Wildcats also lost 6-1 at Snohomish Friday, March 31, in a match that was close until a flood of late Panther goals.
Oak Harbor (0-4-1, 2-5-2) plays Everett (1-2-1, 1-5-2) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.
Oak Harbor 3, Arlington 3
The Wildcats received a boost with the return of several injured players, including leading score JJ Mitchell. Mitchell, playing full time for the first time in a week, immediately made his presence known by scoring off an assist from Kurtis Zylstra just 14 seconds into the match.
Arlington (2-2-1, 3-5-1), however, took control from there, scoring twice before halftime and then adding a second-period goal to go up 3-1.
Then it was Oak Harbor’s turn to dominate.
“It took 60 minutes for us to remember how to play together, and we took over the game,” coach Jeff Laiblin said.
First, Spencer Champion scored “an amazing goal,” according to Laiblin, with an assist from Mitchell.
The Wildcats tied the match with seven minutes remaining when Seth Gluth scored on a scramble after a corner kick.
Oak Harbor had another goal erased because of an offside call.
“It was close but a correct call,” Laiblin said. “We were inches from winning, but I am happy how we finished the game. I was happy with the heart and will power the boys showed late.”
Snohomish 6, Oak Harbor 1
Through three quarters of the match, the Wildcats trailed Snohomish (4-1, 5-2), one of the conference’s top teams, by only one goal, 1-0.
“We had several opportunities to tie, but great keeping by Snohomish kept us from tying the score,” Laiblin said.
The Wildcats, still nursing some injuries, played with basically only one sub, Laiblin said, and “ran out of gas as Snohomish stepped on the gas.”
Champion scored on a set piece from 25 yards out for the Oak Harbor goal.
