In a showdown of unbeaten volleyball teams, defending Wesco champion Stanwood ran its conference win streak to 23 matches by beating host Oak Harbor 3-0 Thursday, Oct. 4.
Stanwood won all three games by the same score, 25-21.
The Spartans upped their record to 9-0; Oak Harbor is now 7-1. The Western Conference’s other two undefeated teams also met Thursday; Snohomish topped Arlington 3-2.
The veteran Stanwood roster is made up of 10 seniors and two juniors; the upstart Wildcats have only four seniors and start two freshmen and a sophomore.
“Our inexperience showed,” Oak Harbor coach Kerri Molitor said, “We will learn from the match tonight and it will help us grow.”
The Wildcats struggled in serve receive and committed a number of service errors.
“As we look ahead, we will work in consistency with serving and passing,” Molitor said.
The loss wasn’t without highlights.
Freshmen Payton Parks and Alexis SanAngelo put up a stuff block on Spartan star Devon Martinka.
“It was exciting to have our two freshmen contribute to that first point,” Molitor said.
The Wildcats’ digging was solid and the team produced several strong rallies, according to Molitor.
“Morgan Pease had a great game — over 40 percent hitting efficiency — but we didn’t get her the ball enough,” she said.
Pease finished with 12 kills and 16 digs.
Cami Bristol had 10 kills and 17 digs; Leielle Salinger added four kills, four aces and two blocks; Leah Quidachay registered 24 assists and 11 digs; and Ceirra Dean tallied 18 digs.
In addition to the on-court highlights, several off the court stood out.
“Great crowd tonight,” Molitor said. “The student section was amazing; the gym was so loud.”
The Wildcats wore pink in honor of their annual breast cancer awareness night.
Oak Harbor plays at Marysville-Pilchuck (2-6) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9.
