Marysville Getchell tripped the Oak Harbor High School soccer team 1-0 Thursday, May 7, in Marysville, nudging the Wildcats out of the playoffs in the process.
Roger Devora scored for the Chargers (4-8, 5-11) seconds into the second half to help Getchell capture the winner-to-postseason, loser-out match.
The win completed a late-season charge by MG; it won four of its past five matches, all by one goal.
The loss eliminated both Oak Harbor and Lynnwood. Had the Wildcats won, Oak Harbor (2-9-1, 2-13-1) and Lynnwood (3-8-1, 3-9-4) would have finished just ahead of Marysville Getchell in the standings and tied for the final postseason berth.
“We played very well,” Oak Harbor coach Brian Thompson said. “(We) had many chances but could not finish.
“I was happy about the season and the way it ended. Being in the hunt for a playoff spot is always exciting. Having a chance to make the playoffs kept the players motivated, and they fought a great battle until the very last moment in last night’s game.”
Thompson thanked the seniors for their leadership and commitment and said he is “looking forward to seeing what this team will do next year.”
“I’d also like to thank the parents for allowing the coaching staff a chance to work with their sons; we have a great group of players.
“Also for the time parents put into the concession stand, scoring and announcing. We put on the best games in Wesco, and it’s because of the volunteers, athletic office staff, administration and sports med.”
