For the third time in three tries this season, the Oak Harbor High School tennis team tripped up Marysville Getchell 4-3, the latest win coming Thursday, Oct. 1, on the Wildcats’ courts.
All three wins followed the same pattern. Oak Harbor swept the singles matches to eke out the victories.
The key match in Thursday’s win was fourth singles. Oak Harbor’s Calib Byers lost the first set 7-6(4) and trailed in the second 4-2 before winning four games in a row to send the match to a third set.
There he was down a service break before bouncing back for a 6-4 win and cementing the team win for the Wildcats.
Oak Harbor also picked up wins in the other singles contests: 1, Jackson Wezeman won 6-0, 6-0; 2, Raymond Paraiso won 6-0, 6-1; and 3, Rodrigo Columbo won 6-1, 6-1.
In second doubles, Aziya Sanders and Matt Molitor were able to force a third set “but got off to a slow start,” according to coach Horace Mells, and were not able to recover.
Doubles results: 1, Jared Hunt/Matthew Hallahan lost 6-3, 6-4; 2, Sanders/Molitor lost 7-5, 2-6, 6-2; and 3, Noel Pangilinan/Jae-Kyung Kwak lost 6-4, 6-1.
Oak Harbor (4-3, 5-4) goes to Arlington (3-3, 3-7) at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6.
