Winning swim meets often becomes a numbers game.
The more bodies in the water, the more points for a team.
Oak Harbor’s relatively small 18-swimmer squad had overcome the obstacle time and again this season, but couldn’t do so in its final meet Thursday, losing 107-78 to a 60-plus member Marysville-Pilchuck team.
“We were sadly overmatched,†OHHS head coach Erika Miller said. “It was OK though, we won a lot of events.
To do that against such a large team is admirable.â€
In fact, the Wildcats won 8-of-12 events. Second and third place finishes, however, gave the Tomahawks the points to win. They also brought a diving team, which automatically gave Marysville 13 points.
The Wildcats had two multiple winners on Thursday. Junior Evan Wilson won the 200 individual medley with a 2:15.46, but had his most impressive swim in the 500 freestyle. Wilson’s 4:55.26 time broke Matt Hall’s school record of 4:59.05 set in 1996. Miller doesn’t think he’s done there.
“I expect him to break it again at districts,†she said.
Wilson also broke the 200 free school record earlier this season with a time of 1:50.17. The old time, set by Mark Mueller, was achieved in 1992.
Senior Brian Hall also won two events Thursday, taking first in the 200 free (2:10.30) and the 50 free (27.42).
Other individual winners included freshman John Hu (100 free) and junior Cameron Spence (100 fly). Spence finished just three-tenths of a second off a state cut at a 1:02.82.
The 200 free relay of Hall, Hu Spence and Wilson, along with the 400 free relay of Wilson, Spence, Hall and Spencer Livermore also took first place.
Oak Harbor ended its regular season with an impressive 5-2 in league and 9-2 overall — good enough for a third place finish in the Western Conference North.
The Wildcats will travel to the district meet, Feb. 9 and 11 in Marysville. OHHS already has five state qualifying times, including three by Wilson in the 500 free, 200 free and 200 IM. Hu earned a fast enough time in the 100 back and the 200 medley relay also made the cut.
OH 120, Stanwood 50
Oak Harbor dominated its road meet on Tuesday, beating league foe Stanwood 120-50.
The Wildcats had two multiple winners and took all three relays.
Hall claimed first in the 200 and 50 freestyles, while Hu won the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke. Other individual winners were Wilson (100 breast) and Spence (100 fly).
