Cory Cameron probably has a sore neck and body today.
The sore neck from straining to see if he has a target on his back. The sore body from being hit by pitches five times in the Oak Harbor Legion baseball team’s 7-5 and 11-2 doubleheader sweep over visiting Marysville Getchell Sunday, July 1.
Cameron wasn’t the only victim. In all, Charger hurlers plunked 10 hitters, five in each game.
Oak Harbor trailed 4-1 heading into the fourth inning in the first game, then scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings sandwiched around a four-run fifth.
The Wildcats scored the day’s opening run in the first inning as Anthony Stewart led off by being — what else — hit by a pitch. He later scored on Mike Maletto’s sacrifice fly.
MG scored four in the fourth and it could have been worse, but Andrew Snavely took over on the mound and recorded two strikeouts to minimize the damage.
In the bottom of the fourth, Snavely doubled in Cameron who had been clipped by a pitch to make it 4-2.
The Chargers added another run in the fifth, and Clay Doughy, like Snavely the previous inning, entered and bailed the ‘Cats out with two strikeouts in relief.
Oak Harbor took its first lead with four runs in the fifth. Jack Richter singled and scored on Grant Schroeder’s double. After Doughty singled in one run and Cameron was hit again, Snavely added another double, driving in two.
The Wildcats got an insurance run in the sixth. Stewart walked, stole second and third and scored on Richter’s base hit.
Richter, Schroeder, Doughty and Snavely all finished with two hits.
In the second game, Oak Harbor starter Schroeder gave up two runs, one earned, in the first inning then blanked the Chargers the rest of the way. He finished with a five hitter and seven strikeouts.
Oak Harbor built a 4-2 lead before blowing the game open with a seven-run sixth.
In the second, Daniel Wolfe walked and Brent Mertins slugged a run-scoring double to make it 2-1.
Oak Harbor pushed home two runs in the third to take the lead. Snavely and Richter walked, moved up on stolen bases, then scored on Cameron’s sacrifice fly and Doughty’s hit.
In the fourth, Wolf and CJ Meders were hit by pitches and Mertins bunted for a hit to load the bases. Schroeder followed with a sacrifice fly to put Oak Harbor up 4-2.
In the sixth, Oak Harbor scored seven runs with two outs and no one on by blending four walks, a hit batter, and an error with hits by Schroeder (double), Snavely and Mertins.
The Wildcats’ nonleague games with Sedro-Woolley Friday, June 29, and Mount Vernon Monday, July 2, were cancelled.
Oak Harbor (5-6, 8-12) entertains Snohomish (3-3) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
