A second-half surge carried Anacortes to a 53-36 win over the visiting Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team in the season opener Tuesday, Dec. 2.

The Seahawks built a five-point lead, 22-17, at halftime and then out scored Oak Harbor 31-19 in the second half to pull away.

Tania Daou sparked Anacortes early and finished the game with 12 points, including draining a trio of three-pointers.

The Seahawks led 14-6 after one quarter, then Oak Harbor out scored Anacortes 11-8 in the second period.

Annie Leete paced Oak Harbor with a game-high 14 points. Jinai Guzman came off the bench to add 10. Natalie Fiallos scored six, Brook Peplinski three, Deja Bunch two and Hayley Lundstrom one.

Leete also led the Wildcats with 10 rebounds, Lundstrom grabbed five and Fiallos collected three assists.

Oak Harbor shot well from the field, hitting 14 of 25 shots for 56 percent to Anacortes’ 31 percent, but put up 27 less shots than the Seahawks.

Anacortes out rebounded Oak Harbor 42-33 and had two fewer turnovers, 19 to 21.

The game was also the debut for Oak Harbor’s first-year coach Jon Atkins. He said, “Anacortes is going to be a tough team in the Northwest Conference this year.

“The (Oak Harbor) girls are starting to grasp some of the concepts of the new offense. I expect a lot of growth out of the team in the next game Friday versus Mount Baker.”

Oak Harbor hosts the Mountaineers at 7:15 p.m. in the home opener Friday, Dec. 6.
