It’s still early in the conference season, but the Oak Harbor High School softball team likes where it is sitting right now.
With a 5-3 win at Everett Friday, March 29, the Wildcats are now 2-0 in Wesco 3A North play and in first place.
No one could remember the last time Oak Harbor won its first two conference games.
Down 3-2, the Wildcats scored the tying run in the fourth and two in the fifth to leap into first place.
Oak Harbor scored two right out of the gate. In the first Lexie Findley walked and scored on Shawna Steele’s triple. Steele then scored on Emily Saar’s ground out.
Everett (1-1, 2-6) didn’t take long to tie it, getting two in its half of the first with the help of three Wildcat errors.
The Seagulls scored again in the third, then Oak Harbor tied it in the fourth when Saar singled, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Kelsey Rankin’s grounder to second.
The Wildcats finished the scoring in the fifth. Hannah Salmons singled and moved to second on a sacrifice. Natalie Fiallos singled in Salmons, stole second and scored on an error.
Saar threw a complete game for Oak Harbor, giving up only one earned run on seven hits; she struck out six.
Fiallos finished with three hits, while Steele (triple), Saar, Salmons and Kelly Findley each had one.
Oak Harbor (2-0, 3-5) meets Stanwood (0-1, 2-4) at home at 4 p.m. Monday, April 1.
