Running out of surprises, the Oak Harbor High School volleyball team finished second to Ferndale in the District 1 3A tournament Saturday, Nov. 9, at Glacier Peak High School.

The seventh-seeded Wildcats pulled off two upsets to reach the championship match with Ferndale before running out of magic in the 3-1 loss.

The Golden Eagles (13-4) won 25-17, 25-21, 17-25, 26-26 to earn the district’s top seed in this weekend’s state tournament.

Oak Harbor (6-11) receives the second seed, and Meadowdale (14-4), which defeated Stanwood 3-0 Saturday, picks up the third and final seed to state.

The state tournament is Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15 and 16, at Saint Martin’s University and Timberline High School in Lacey.

Oak Harbor plays eighth-ranked Eastside Catholic (17-4) of Sammamish in the state tournament’s first match at 11:45 a.m. Friday.

The winner and loser of the Oak Harbor/Eastside Catholic match meet the winner and loser of top-ranked Southridge of Kennewick and Bishop Blanchet (10-12) of Seattle at 6:45 p.m. Friday.

Oak Harbor last played at state in 2010 where it won one of three matches.

The Wildcats also competed at state eight times from 1982 to 1991.

After the two emotional wins at district earlier this week, Oak Harbor came out flat in the first game against Ferndale, according to coach Kerri Molitor, but picked up its play after that.

Molitor lauded the Golden Eagles’ defense, adding, “Ferndale is tough.”

“We were disappointed by the loss,” she said, “but still looking forward to state.”

Kayleigh Harper racked up 20 kills, 11 digs and four blocks; while Hailey Beecher had 36 assists, four aces and 11 digs.

Claire Anderson added 10 kills and 11 digs, and Natalie McVey collected 12 digs.
