Two singles players and a doubles team will represent the Oak Harbor High School tennis team at the district tournament Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 26 and 27, at Everett’s Jackson High School.
The top four finishers at the Wesco North Divisional Tournament Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 20 and 21, at Arlington qualified for district.
Oak Harbor’s Jackson Wezeman finished second and Rodrigo Columbo placed third or fourth (he will play for seeding Thursday, Oct. 22) in singles in the divisional meet.
In doubles, seniors Raymond Paraiso and Calib Byers nabbed fourth.
Wezeman, a junior seeded second, dropped the title match 6-0, 6-0 to Everett senior Ulise Aceves-Castaneda, the top seed who didn’t yield a game in the tournament.
Wezeman opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win over seventh-seeded Logan Plant of Marysville-Pilchuck, then topped third-seeded Holden Fox of Everett 6-3, 7-6(5).
Fourth-seeded Columbo, junior, beat fifth-seeded Andy Hougan of M-P 6-0, 6-0; lost to Aceves-Castaneda by the same score; and then topped Plant 6-4, 6-0.
Sixth-seeded Paraiso and Byers started with a 6-1, 6-0 win over 11th seeded Griffin Hubbert/John Turral of Marysville-Pilchuck. In the quarter finals, the Oak Harbor pair lost 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to Arlington’s third-seeded Nicholas Mendro/Connor Guthrie.
Paraiso and Byers bounced back to edge Everett’s AJ Pignataro/Jacob Rotert, the seventh seed, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(1), followed by a win over fourth-seeded Malcom Fox/Ryan Burt of Everett 6-3, 0-6, 6-2.
